CDU Names Ansgar Heveling as Head of Germany’s Federal Court of Auditors, Securing SPD Backing.

Anselm Heveling, a CDU member of the federal parliament, is being considered by the black‑red governing coalition to become the next President of the Federal Court of Auditors, the supreme financial watchdog of the Republic. Union parliamentary leader Jens Spahn briefed the party members during the caucus on Tuesday afternoon, the “Tagesspiegel” reports.

A lawyer from North Rhine‑Westphalia, Heveling has served as the CDU/CSU caucus’s legal adviser since 2018. During the meeting, Union officials emphasized that employees of the Court of Auditors must work “judicially independent”. They added that, with such an approach and the associated sense of responsibility, Heveling is “well acquainted” with the role of a legal adviser.

The coalition’s partner, the SPD, has already signaled its support for the nomination. The formal election of Heveling in the Bundestag is scheduled for early May, and a successor has yet to be decided.
