The CDU plans to advocate for the creation of “phone protection zones” in all schools across Germany. According to a proposal submitted to the federal convention in Stuttgart in February-reported by the “Rheinische Post” (Sunday edition)-students up to and including grade 10 should be subject to mandatory protection zones in every school, where the private use of digital devices during lessons and breaks is prohibited.
Several scientific studies have shown that constant phone usage is linked to lower attention, higher stress levels and reduced satisfaction with school life. Many teachers also report conflicts, cyberbullying and disruptions in the classroom that are directly associated with private smartphone use.
The proposed phone protection zones are presented not as a regression but as a contribution to clearer pedagogy, stronger social cohesion and a healthier school environment. The current fragmented regulatory situation creates uncertainty for schools, teachers and parents. The “Rheinische Post” indicates that the convention will be advised to adopt the proposal.
