The CDU has stated its intention to secure hosting rights for the 2042 FIFA World Cup for men in Germany. According to a report by the “Rheinische Post” on Wednesday, this stance was formalised in a motion presented at the party’s federal congress in February. The motion declares: “The CDU of Germany supports Germany’s bid to FIFA as host for the men’s FIFA World Cup in 2042”.
The motion also urges the federal government to develop a comprehensive concept for Germany as host and to support a bid submitted by the German Football Association (DFB). It recommends that the congress adopt the motion.
In its justification, the motion cites the positive legacy of the 2006 World Cup and the 2024 European Championship hosted in Germany, arguing that hosting another tournament would invite the world to experience German culture and hospitality. It notes the growing trend of authoritarian states-such as Qatar in 2022 and Saudi Arabia in 2034-using the World Cup to polish their image. Accordingly, the motion stresses that Germany, as a potential host, should promote football’s values-fair play, rule of law and democracy-and represent these principles on the global stage.
