CDU Strategist Warns of Existential Threat Over Anti-AfD Stance

Former CDU General Secretary Peter Tauber has delivered a stark warning to his party, challenging the longstanding “firewall” strategy employed to isolate the Alternative for Germany (AfD). In a recent podcast interview, Tauber argued that the CDU’s rigid adherence to this approach is not only failing to contain the AfD’s influence but is actively jeopardizing the party’s own survival.

Tauber stressed that a decade of consistently maintaining distance from the AfD has yielded no discernible positive results. He cautioned against continuing on the same course, stating that such inertia risks condemning the CDU to political irrelevance. Critically, he clarified that his call is not a plea for coalition building with the AfD, but rather a demand for a reassessment of the political landscape. He suggests the CDU should openly present its positions and invite collaboration from the Greens and SPD, but emphasizes a willingness to seek alliances elsewhere if those parties decline.

He painted a concerning picture of the CDU trapped between the political left and right, a situation he characterized as “walled in” and existentially threatening. This perceived inability to entertain even the possibility of alignment with the AfD, he argues, stifles independent thought and limits the CDU’s ability to adapt to the evolving political climate. He believes that this rigidity significantly increases the risk of the party’s eventual dissolution.

Moreover, Tauber expressed concern that the current political dynamics, driven by the CDU’s adherence to traditional left-wing policies, are contributing to a sense of frustration and desperation among voters. He warned that this dissatisfaction creates fertile ground for the further rise of extremist parties, suggesting that citizens will ultimately seek solutions, regardless of how unconventional or potentially destabilizing those solutions may be.

Addressing the potential for a scenario requiring cooperation with the Left party to prevent an AfD-led government, Tauber indicated profound reservations. He questioned whether the CDU could maintain its traditional commitment to political responsibility if forced into such an alliance. While staunchly rejecting any possibility of tolerating an AfD minority government or entering into a junior coalition partnership, he simultaneously dismissed the prospect of blindly supporting leftist policies simply to exclude the AfD. He insisted on a more nuanced and independent approach to policy formation, free from the perceived dictates of either extreme.

Tauber’s intervention represents a significant departure from the CDU’s established political rhetoric and underscores the growing anxieties surrounding the party’s capacity to navigate the increasingly polarized German political landscape.
