After the municipal elections in Hesse, the green party faces the danger of losing its leading position in the state’s largest city, Frankfurt am Main. Until now, more than 70 % of the polling districts have been counted and the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) leads clearly with roughly 26 %, while the Greens sit at about 21 %. This marks a reversal of the standings compared with the last election five years ago.
The Social Democratic Party (SPD) follows at roughly 16-17 %, a level similar to that it held five years earlier. The Alternative for Germany (AfD) currently gathers around 10 %-about double its former share. The Left records 9 %, a point higher than five years ago.
The Free Democratic Party (FDP) has fallen from 7.6 % in 2021 to just under 5 % in Frankfurt. Because municipal elections in Hesse do not use a 5 % threshold, the FDP’s loss is significant but not disqualifying.
In the state’s second‑largest city, Wiesbaden, the CDU again sits in the lead with approximately 26-27 % once almost all precincts have been counted. The SPD comes next at about 22 %, followed by the Greens at around 15 %, the AfD at roughly 13 %, the Left at 7 %, and the FDP at about 5 %.
Kassel presents a different picture. With 95 % of precincts counted, the Greens hold the top spot at 22.4 %, narrowly outpolling the CDU at 21.8 %. The SPD is close behind at 19.7 %, the Left at 14.5 %, the AfD at 12.1 %, and the FDP trails at 3.1 %.
