CDU Secretary-General Franziska Hoppermann issued a warning to the Social Democratic Party (SPD) regarding the potential strain on the federal “black-red” coalition should the SPD choose to form an alliance with the Greens and the Left Party in Berlin. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, she stated that such a move would fundamentally alter the coalition atmosphere and provoke reactions. She argued that if the environment shifted in Berlin, it would no longer be “honestly possible” for many members of her party to jointly visit the Bundestag on January 27th to commemorate the victims of National Socialism.
Hoppermann expressed deep concern that Jewish people in Berlin might have to experience renewed fear 90 years after the Holocaust. She noted that the president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany had articulated clear views on the matter.
She urged the SPD and the Greens to decide the path they wished to take, noting that she had received inquiries from across the globe regarding what was currently happening. Hoppermann questioned whether the SPD and Greens intended to act as enablers for left-wing extremists, especially given the existence of a different parliamentary majority supported by the Union party.
She stressed that the source of antisemitism-whether stemming from the right or the left-should be irrelevant. Furthermore, she pointed out that when labeling “clan crime” as racism, while concurrently overlooking supporters of terrorism under the “red carpet,” a serious breakdown in the rule of law emerges. In her closing remarks, Hoppermann asserted that the developments currently taking place in Berlin are far from insignificant.
