CDU Urges EU to Reject Safe‑Third‑Country Asylum Seekers at Borders and Tighten Citizenship Criteria

The Brussels branch of the CDU has announced that it wants asylum seekers who arrive in the EU from so‑called “safe third countries” to be rejected outright at the EU external borders, without any further examination. This proposal was submitted by the association for the party’s national convention in Stuttgart, as reported by the “Bild” (Monday edition).

The group is calling for a new EU regulation that would make such immediate refusals possible. To prevent the measure from being struck down by courts under the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), they propose securing the policy with an additional protocol to the Convention.

In addition to border control measures, the association plans to raise the thresholds for naturalisation dramatically. Proposed changes include stricter language requirements and a new rule that applicants must have lived in Germany for at least five years without receiving social assistance before their naturalisation can be considered. Furthermore, naturalised citizens who, during demonstrations, call for the establishment of a caliphate or sharia law would have their German passports revoked.

“Both the German government and the EU are on a solid footing in tackling illegal migration” said Tim Peters, chairman of the CDU’s Brussels office, in a statement to the newspaper. “Now it’s time to take the next step”.
