The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) has voiced its support for President Frank-Walter Steinmeier’s call for a comprehensive reform of the social welfare system. CDU General Secretary Carsten Linnemann, in remarks to the Tagesspiegel newspaper, affirmed the President’s assessment, stating the need to modernize the system, eliminate unintended consequences and address instances of misuse.
Linnemann emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting a widespread recognition of the need for change and a window of opportunity for reform not seen in two decades. He expressed the CDU’s readiness to contribute to this process and to deliver meaningful results.
President Steinmeier, in a recent address to the 83rd German Welfare Day in Erfurt, urged the current coalition government to proactively implement social reforms. He stated that streamlining the system to improve efficiency and user-friendliness is now imperative.
His speech highlighted the necessity of correcting inefficiencies within the social welfare structure, enhancing the precision of benefit distribution and actively combating abuse. Steinmeier also underscored the long overdue need for increased cooperation between social service agencies and the digitization of administrative processes.
