Some traditional Valentine’s‑Day gifts have seen unusually high price rises over the past year. According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), chocolate prices jumped 17.8 % from 2024 to 2025, while cut flowers increased by 5.3 %. Those who opt for a dinner out instead of giving chocolate or flowers also faced higher costs: food and drinks in restaurants, cafés, bars and similar venues rose 3.6 % compared with 2024. For reference, the overall consumer price index grew by 2.2 % during the same period.
In a medium‑term comparison, these classic Valentine’s gifts have outpaced general inflation. In 2025, chocolate prices were 41.7 % higher than in 2020, cut flowers 38.2 % higher, and dining‑out prices 31.8 % higher. Over the same timeframe, the overall consumer price index increased by 21.9 %.
