Consumers noticed that classic Valentine’s Day gifts had become markedly more expensive last year. According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on Valentine’s Day, the price of chocolate pralines rose 17.8 % in 2025 compared with 2024, while cut flowers cost 5.3 % more.
Those who prefer to spend a night out instead of giving pralines or flowers also faced higher costs. Prices for food and drinks in restaurants, cafés, bars and similar venues increased by 3.6 % over 2024. By contrast, the overall consumer price index only grew 2.2 % in the same period.
Looking further back, classic Valentine’s Day presents have outpaced general inflation. In 2025, pralines were 41.7 % pricier than in 2020, cut flowers 38.2 % more expensive, and dining‑out meals 31.8 % higher. Over the same five‑year span, the overall consumer price index rose 21.9 %.
