On the tenth anniversary of the death of FDP politician Guido Westerwelle, former party leader Christian Lindner reflected on his legacy.
“The early warning that Guido raised-before anyone else-was that the very foundations of our prosperity can be lost through a wrong attitude” Lindner told the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung”. He said Westerwelle was “laughed at and misunderstood by many”. For Lindner, that warning remains an enduring call.
Guido Westerwelle, the former FDP chair and foreign minister, died on 18 March 2016 after a battle with cancer. In Berlin, the anniversary will see many of his former colleagues, including former Chancellor Angela Merkel, gathering for a remembrance service.
