A leading figure within the German Green Party has issued a stark warning to Chancellor Friedrich Merz and his government regarding climate action, following a recent assessment by the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Katharina Dröge, parliamentary group leader for the Greens, cautioned that the current trajectory risks a breach of international law.
The ICJ’s report, published this week, examined the obligations of states regarding climate protection and concluded that nations failing to implement adequate measures against climate change may be violating international legal frameworks.
Dröge’s statement emphasized the report’s clarity, asserting that Germany has a legal responsibility to rapidly reduce emissions and advance global climate justice. She specifically criticized the government’s policies, suggesting that hindering the expansion of renewable energy sources and obstructing climate protection efforts could lead to violations of international law and erode Germany’s standing on the global stage.
Dröge urged immediate action from Merz and his administration, calling for a decisive push toward climate-friendly energy supply and the presentation of a comprehensive and effective climate protection program. She described any alternative approach as “irresponsible” and ultimately, a violation of international legal obligations.
