Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Katherina Reiche of the CDU commended the decisions made over the weekend by the leadership of the black-red coalition at Villa Borsig in Berlin concerning relief for citizens. According to Reiche, publishing in the Funke Media Group’s newspapers on Tuesday, “The resolutions from the weekend send an important signal: By temporarily lowering the energy tax, we are easing the burden on the economy and the people who rely on their cars”. She added that simultaneously, they are strengthening the cartel office to ensure fair competition at gas stations while also promoting domestic energies. She described these measures as “a good foundation”. These actions were also beneficial for the numerous small and medium-sized businesses that cover long daily distances using cars and vans. Reiche concluded by stating, “Now it is about implementing structural reforms quickly and bravely, including in energy policy. Together, we must work for a competitive location in Germany”. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Economic Affairs noted that the minister had been “in constant exchange regarding the resolutions”. This followed an instance on Friday when Reiche had publicly criticized proposals from Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil of the SPD regarding possible reliefs, which subsequently led to criticism of Reiche from within the SPD.
