Coalition Conflict Erupts After CDU Member’s Doubts Challenge Government’s Stability

Doubts over the continuation of the center-right coalition government have drawn sharp criticism from within the alliance itself. The immediate source of contention was a statement made by CDU representative Christian von Stetten, who suggested the governing coalition might end prematurely, claiming it “will not last four years”.

Dennis Radtke, head of the CDU’s employee wing, strongly rejected this notion. Speaking to “Handelsblatt”, he criticized the talk as “rowdy conservatism that plays with power and talks about a minority government, which doesn’t help us”. Radtke emphasized that the general populace is highly stressed by ongoing crises, and what is needed is empathetic and measured communication, not heightened drama. He argued that those who peddle “end-of-times rhetoric” do not understand the gravity of the moment, pointing out that the coming months will be crucial in determining the future of democracy.

Resistance to the dramatic rhetoric also came from the SPD camp. Bundestagsabgeordnete Sebastian Rollef told the same newspaper that it is hardly constructive for individual politicians to seek attention through unnecessary comments. Correspondingly, SPD foreign policy expert Ralf Stegner stressed that despite ongoing difficulties, there is no democratic alternative to the existing coalition. Stegner further argued that any other potential configuration-such as a minority government, premature elections, or closer cooperation between the CDU and the AfD-would only strengthen the undue influence of parties with far-right tendencies, deeming such scenarios unacceptable.
