Union and SPD parliamentary group leaders are urging their members to remain disciplined as the parliamentary summer recess begins. Steffen Bilger, the parliamentary spokesperson for the Union party, told the “Rheinische Post” that the previous six months were intensely busy, marked by crucial decisions regarding reforms.
Bilger noted that further reforms are planned, including improvements in care services and tax relief measures. Furthermore, discussions about the budget for the coming year are set to begin directly in September, requiring clear prioritization and significant austerity efforts. He argued that the break should function as a time to clear one’s mind and recharge so that members can approach their upcoming tasks with renewed energy, adding, “Especially during this phase, we should practice breathing out instead of always pushing forward.”
Similarly, Dirk Wiese, the SPD parliamentary spokesperson, informed the “Rheinische Post” that the coalition had successfully delivered important legislation and achieved key milestones through the coalition committee before the recess, successfully establishing central priorities for their work. According to Wiese, it is now essential to carry this momentum into the break to accelerate the preparations for shared projects, such as implementing the recommendations from the pension commission. He remarked that the coalition preferred to leave summer lull discussions to the opposition, concluding with a lighthearted comment: “We are happily commenting only on the official appointment of Jürgen Klopp as the national football coach.”
