Congo Ebola Outbreak Hits 10,000+ Cases; Fatality Rate Approaches 50%

Authorities reported on Tuesday that 10,060 confirmed cases of the Ebola outbreak have been registered in the Democratic Republic of Congo. More than half of the recorded cases, approximately 4,887, resulted in patient deaths. This gives the outbreak a case fatality rate of 48.6%, while the contact tracing rate has reached 81.6%.

The current epidemic is caused by the Bundibugyo Ebola virus, for which there are no approved vaccines. The first cases were reported in May 2026 within the Ituri province. Following the initial outbreak, the virus spread to the North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uele, Bas-Uele, and Tshopo provinces. Nevertheless, Ituri remains the epicenter, accounting for 71.7% of all confirmed cases and 33.3% of the new cases reported.
