Construction Sector Blasts Coalition Failure

The German construction industry association, HDB, has voiced strong concerns regarding the slow disbursement of funds from the special fund dedicated to infrastructure and climate protection. According to HDB’s CEO, Tim-Oliver Müller, a decision made before the summer recess could have immediately initiated 70 to 80 construction projects. He warned that delays risk turning 2025 into a “lost construction year” while companies have been experiencing a shortfall of orders since November 2024 due to provisional budget management.

The association specifically highlighted challenges faced by Autobahn GmbH, noting the inability to launch new tenders due to the current budgetary constraints. Müller expressed disappointment that an immediate program for highways could not be agreed upon, despite promises from the federal government prioritizing infrastructure modernization through the special fund.

Reports indicate that some areas are even experiencing short-term work arrangements within bridge construction. Müller emphasized that the current implementation is not aligned with the intended purpose of the special fund and is hindering construction progress nationwide.

A spokesperson for Autobahn GmbH acknowledged, without providing specific figures, that prepared projects are currently unable to commence due to the existing budgetary circumstances.
