The Foreign Office expects the direction of the Iranian regime to remain essentially unchanged following Moustafa Chamenei’s election as the new Supreme Leader. A spokesperson could not forecast whether the regime would stabilize. He said that it is clear from the choice of Chamenei, the son of the late revolutionary leader, that the trajectory of the regime will likely be one of continuity, or at least it is reasonable to assume such continuity.
“We have repeatedly made it clear that the Iranian people should decide their own future, and especially have the choice about who will lead the country in making its political decisions” the spokesperson added. He emphasized that in the past this has not happened and is not occurring in this instance either.
