Costs Defended Amid Criticism

A leading security expert from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) has defended the cost of increased border controls conducted by Germany’s Federal Police, responding to recent criticism regarding expenditure. Alexander Throm argued that public safety and the prevention of irregular migration justify the financial investment.

In a statement to the “Rheinische Post”, Throm, the CDU/CSU parliamentary group’s spokesman for domestic policy, asserted that the economic costs associated with irregular migration significantly outweigh the expenses incurred by border controls. He further highlighted potential broader societal implications linked to uncontrolled migration.

Throm pointed to data released by the Federal Police detailing increased instances of individuals being turned away at borders, outstanding arrest warrants being addressed and the disruption of both human trafficking operations and extremist activity, as evidence of the effectiveness of the strengthened controls. He advocated for the continuation of these measures indefinitely.

According to a response from the German government to a parliamentary inquiry by the Left party, the renewed border controls – implemented across all German state borders in September 2024 – have cost a total of 80.5 million euros through the end of June.
