CSU Rejects Fuel‑Discount, Urges Stronger Antitrust Law to Shield Drivers

Alexander Hoffmann, the chief of the CSU’s state group, has rejected the idea of a fuel‑discount scheme to ease costs for motorists. “Tightening our antitrust law is more effective than a fuel rebate because it ensures that price caps actually reach people” he told the news portal T‑Online.

He explained that after the start of the Ukraine war the coalition’s last fuel discount had oil companies siphon off 70 % of the relief, leaving only 30 % for drivers. “That mistake must not happen again” Hoffmann said. To prevent such a repeat, the government is now focusing on shifting the burden of proof for price increases and using decisive legal measures to prohibit unjustified price hikes by firms with dominant market positions.
