The leader of the CSU parliamentary group, Alexander Hoffmann, has emphatically ruled out any potential cooperation between the center-right Union parties and the Alternative for Germany (AfD). Speaking to the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland, Hoffmann stated that the AfD aims to dismantle the Union and labeled them as “the ultimate adversary.
Addressing the situation in Saxony-Anhalt, where the AfD recently reached 39% in a new poll – significantly ahead of the CDU at 27% – Hoffmann expressed concern. “This poll should worry all democrats” he remarked.
Hoffmann refuted repeated suggestions of a potential partnership between the Union and the AfD, insisting that the Union, particularly the CSU, represents a significant obstacle to the AfD’s agenda. He specifically highlighted the Union’s migration policies, which he credited with causing a substantial decline in refugee numbers-a policy outcome he described as detrimental to the AfD’s perspective.
Despite recent increases in AfD polling figures, even with a stricter approach to migration policy, Hoffmann acknowledged the positive effects of the Union’s shifting policies. “Our migration policy shift is taking effect, but the challenges are more comprehensive and require time”.
