Czech parliamentary elections held this weekend have yielded a significant victory for the ANO party, led by former Prime Minister Andrej Babiš. Provisional projections released Saturday evening by Czech media indicate ANO secured approximately 38% of the national vote across all districts.
The Spolu coalition, currently led by Prime Minister Petr Fiala, experienced a considerable drop in support, achieving around 20%. The liberal-conservative STAN movement garnered just under 11% of the vote. As a result of these results, the existing governing coalition is projected to lose its majority in the Chamber of Deputies.
During the campaign, Babiš advocated for policies including increased wages, a stricter approach to migration, a lessened emphasis on climate protection initiatives and a reduction in Czech assistance to Ukraine. Critics have voiced concerns regarding potential shifts in the country’s alignment with NATO and the European Union. Further official results are expected shortly and will determine the ultimate composition of the next parliament.
