The chairman of the Danish Defence Committee, Rasmus Jarlov, warns of a possible violent takeover of Greenland by the United States under President Donald Trump.
The “Bild” (Wednesday edition) said Jarlov: “This will be ugly”. Denmark could “not rule out” that Trump would use violence. When asked whether Denmark would, in the worst case, defend itself militarily against a US invasion, Jarlov replied: “Denmark would, of course, defend Greenland with the means at our disposal”.
At the same time, he referred to the power imbalance: “We also understand the size difference between Denmark and the United States. And we know it will be a very difficult fight”.
Regarding nuclear deterrence, Jarlov expressed that Europe should possess its own nuclear weapons. “I’m not necessarily of the view that Denmark should have nuclear weapons, but I believe Europe should have them”. To justify this, he said: “That’s why I firmly believe that Europe must now have its own nuclear weapons, because we see that we can no longer rely on American protection”.
