SV Darmstadt 98 and FC Schalke 04 finished their Saturday evening league match against one another with a 1‑1 draw in the 2. Bundesliga.
The match began with a quick counter that put Schalke in front. Moussa Sylla headed the ball past the Darmstadt goalkeeper after a corner from Aouchiche in the 44th minute. The jubilance, however, was short‑lived. In stoppage time for the first half, a long ball from Richter found Pfeiffer, who sent the ball into the path of Isac Lidberg. The Swedish striker shot accurately from close range, equalising for the hosts.
The second half opened with Darmstadt pressing hard. They produced several corners but failed to find the net. Schalke had a promising chance created by Aouchiche, but the Darmstadt keep‑er Schuhen made a decisive punch to deny the shot. In the midfield both teams largely neutralised each other, yet Darmstadt appeared to command more of the play.
A key moment came in the 62nd minute when Schalke’s keeper Karius made a strong reflex save to keep the scoreline even. Hornby had a chance when he broke free in front of the keeper, but the defensive line held firm. Despite a number of other opportunities on both sides, the score remained 1‑1 by the final whistle.
The result leaves Schalke virtually on top of the standings, while Darmstadt remains in fourth place. The game was characterised by a high tempo and hard, physical battles; no goal‑scorers from either side conceded any points. The match was also marred by the injury of Luga Marseiler, who was taken off after a tackle in the first half, yet the two teams maintained a fiercely competitive atmosphere throughout.
