Dax Climbs on Bullish Trend as Investors Await Key US Inflation Data

The German stock index, Dax, extended its modest initial gains on Wednesday through midday. The leading index reached approximately 26,520 points around 12:30 p.m., marking a 0.5 percent increase from the closing level of the previous day. Top performers included Siemens Energy, Infineon, and Rheinmetall, while the bottom five were Qiagen, Volkswagen, and Brenntag.

Jochen Stanzl, Chief Market Analyst at Consorsbank, commented that the Dax was showing characteristic traits of a bull market after a year-long hiatus, noting that the index was rising almost imperceptibly but nevertheless determinedly. While gains remained small, record levels were nearly achieved daily. He warned that investors eager to enter the market were being forced to buy in, as pullbacks were absent. Furthermore, no worries about unrest in the Middle East, interest rate concerns, or heat-related strains on the German economy provided a cheaper entry point for investors. Stanzl added that anxiety among investors, fueled by the fear of missing out (FOMO), was mounting.

Looking ahead, Stanzl noted that all attention was focused on U.S. inflation data for the day. Although these numbers could influence expectations regarding when the American central bank might adjust interest rates, he suggested they would have little power to completely eliminate the “ghost of rates” from the trading floor. He stressed that these data points were unlikely to distract from the fact that the Fed had already missed its official 2 percent inflation target for several consecutive years.

Meanwhile, the European common currency was slightly weaker on Wednesday afternoon. The Euro traded at $1.1538, while the Dollar fetched 0.8667 Euros. In the energy markets, the price of oil dropped. Around noon Central European Time, a barrel of North Sea Brent crude was priced at $88.68, a decrease of 23 cents (0.3 percent) compared to the previous day’s close.
