DAX Falls; Trump’s Davos Speech Offers Brief Relief and Gold Breaks All‑Time Highs

On Wednesday the DAX cut its losses toward the end of trading after a steep decline, yet still finished in the negative. At the Xetra close the index was at 24,561 points, 0.6 % below the previous day’s close.

In the afternoon there was a noticeable uptick while U.S. President Donald Trump delivered his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Trump reiterated his claim to buy Greenland, but the threat-should Denmark reject this bid-was downgraded from a possible military annexation to a mere “we will remember” warning.

Gold kept rising, reaching a new all‑time high. By late afternoon an ounce of fine gold traded at $4,847-a 1.7 % increase and the highest ever spot price. That equates to €133.08 per gram, another record.

The euro weakened a touch on Wednesday afternoon: one euro was worth $1.1709, and one dollar was equivalent to €0.8540.
