DAX Gains Modestly Amid Cautious Market Despite Strong German Retail Data

The Dax managed to turn positive toward midday on Monday after starting the session cautiously. The index reached approximately 25,880 points around 12:30 PM, representing a gain of 0.2 percent compared to the previous trading day. In terms of stocks, Infineon, Fresenius, and Heidelberg Materials led the gains, while Deutsche Telekom, Bayer, and Daimler Truck finished among the top performers.

Andreas Lipkow, Chief Market Analyst at CMC Markets, noted, “Despite the positive start to the week, trading in Frankfurt remains characterized by caution.” He added that investors are processing several new economic figures that collectively paint a fairly constructive picture of the European economy. Lipkow highlighted, “In particular, German retail sales surprised positively, rising by two percent, which is significantly above the expected 0.4 percent, signaling a more robust consumer demand than was recently feared.”

Furthermore, Lipkow observed that the purchasing managers’ indices from Germany and the Eurozone are generally aligned with expectations, remaining in the expansionary range with figures above 50. However, sentiment at the European level has soured somewhat compared to the previous month. He concluded that “while the economy shows signs of stabilization, there is no talk of a self-sustaining recovery yet. The positive retail data is a hopeful sign, but a sustained economic recovery requires more than just isolated positive data points.”

Meanwhile, the European common currency strengthened midday. The Euro was worth 1.1204 US dollars, and consequently, the dollar cost 0.8925 Euros.

Oil prices saw a decline. Around 12:00 PM Central European Time on Monday afternoon, a barrel of North Sea Brent crude was priced at $108.70, marking a drop of 4.2 percent-or $4.77-from the close of the previous trading day.
