Dax Opens Lower as Investors Await Nvidia Earnings and Key Jackson Hole Policy Signals

The German stock index, the Dax, began the trading day on Wednesday with slight declines. Around 9:30 AM, the leading index was calculated at approximately 26,225 points, which represented a drop of 0.2 percent from the previous day’s closing level. Among the top-ranking stocks were Deutsche Bank, Heidelberg Materials, and Qiagen, while SAP, Scout24, and Rheinmetall finished strong.

Commentator Thomas Altmann of QC Partners noted that investors were eagerly awaiting today’s market close, following Nvidia’s after-hours report on its second-quarter business. While a 16th consecutive quarter of profit growth is expected, Altmann emphasized that the future outlook is just as critical as the figures themselves. This Nvidia report effectively concludes the reporting season for the second quarter.

Looking ahead, investors are keenly anticipating the central bank meeting scheduled for tomorrow in Jackson Hole. Altmann pointed to the speech by Kevin Warsh, which is generating particular interest, as some hope for more detailed insights into US monetary policy in the coming months. However, he cautioned that Warsh is unlikely to take a definitive stance for or against a September interest rate hike at Jackson Hole.

On currency markets, the European common currency weakened somewhat Wednesday morning. The Euro was trading at $1.1670, while the US dollar was priced at 0.8569 Euros. Meanwhile, the price of oil fell. Around 9 AM German time, a barrel of North Sea Brent crude cost $86.59, which was 2.3 percent lower than the previous day’s close.
