The Dax index saw a notable decline on Wednesday. Closing trading on Xetra, the index settled at 25,199 points, representing a 0.8 percent decrease compared to the previous day’s close.
In terms of stock performance, Zalando led the gains, surging over three percent just before the close, closely followed by BMW and Fresenius. Conversely, Commerzbank dropped sharply, falling by over three percent before the end of the trading session, while Siemens and Vonovia also experienced significant losses.
Andreas Lipkow, Chief Market Analyst at CMC Markets, observed that investors in Frankfurt are currently caught between hope and fear, which has kept the Dax highly volatile. He noted that on one hand, the market is hopeful for a de-escalation in the Middle East, which would lead to lower energy prices. On the other hand, persistent high bond yields and uncertainty surrounding the continuation of the AI boom are causing caution.
The analyst further pointed out that high energy costs have already impacted consumer sentiment, fueling worries about the economic outlook in both Europe and the US. Despite these headwinds, the AI narrative remains a crucial pillar supporting the stock markets. Consequently, Micron’s quarterly results are expected to attract considerable attention today. The company must demonstrate that the AI boom is translating into sufficient operational performance within the semiconductor industry. If Micron disappoints, the recently waning skepticism toward the AI sector could quickly turn into selling pressure.
Lipkow also highlighted high bond yields as a third pressure point. These yields not only increase financing costs for corporations and governments but also make bonds an increasingly attractive alternative to stocks. As returns rise, the justification required for the high valuations in equity markets grows, likely keeping a cap on prices and hindering sustainable upward movement for the time being.
Currency movements showed a slight strengthening for the Euro in the afternoon session; one Euro cost 1.1359 US dollars, meaning the dollar was available for 0.8804 Euros.
Meanwhile, the price of gold weakened somewhat, trading at $4,158 per troy ounce in the afternoon, marking a 0.5 percent drop, which equates to 117.70 Euros per gram. Conversely, the oil price increased significantly; a barrel of North Sea Brent crude cost $103.70 around 5 PM Central European Time, reflecting a 1.1 percent increase from the previous day’s close.
