Sources close to the committee report that members of the working group tasked with reforming the debt brake have been unable to reach a consensus. Consequently, expectations for concrete results are low, with committee meetings reportedly becoming merely procedural. Participants have reportedly known for the last two months that achieving an outcome is unlikely due to deep disagreements regarding the debt brake itself and potential measures for relaxation. Nevertheless, the meetings are continuing to prevent any additional strain on the current governmental coalition’s broader structural reform negotiations covering areas like taxes, the budget, healthcare, and long-term care. Currently, instead of meeting in full sessions, the committee is convening in smaller working groups. A final session is scheduled for May, after which the group will only present a non-binding collection of ideas.
