The price‑adjusted production in manufacturing fell 1.9 percent in December 2025 compared with November 2025, after seasonal and calendar adjustments, according to provisional figures from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).
Over a less volatile three‑month period, production from October to December 2025 was 0.9 percent higher than in the preceding three months. In November 2025, the revised provisional data showed a 0.2 percent increase versus October 2025 (the initial provisional estimate had been +0.8 percent). Compared with the same month in 2024, December 2025 production was 0.6 percent lower after calendar adjustment.
The December decline is mainly driven by lower output in the automotive sector (‑8.9 percent), machinery manufacturing (‑6.8 percent) and maintenance and assembly of machines (‑17.6 percent). Production gains in other sectors partially offset the drop, most notably in metal products (+3.2 percent) and other vehicle manufacturing (aircraft, ships, trains, military vehicles) (+10.5 percent). Construction activity also increased slightly, with specialized building and finishing work up 2.5 percent and building construction up 8.4 percent; overall construction output rose 3.0 percent.
Industry production (manufacturing excluding energy and construction) fell 3.0 percent seasonally and calendar‑adjusted in December 2025 versus November 2025. Within industry, consumer goods production rose 0.5 percent, investment goods production fell 5.3 percent, and intermediate goods production rose 1.2 percent. Outside the industrial sector, energy generation dropped 1.8 percent.
Compared with December 2024, industry production was 0.2 percent lower after calendar adjustment.
Energy‑intensive industries saw a 0.9 percent drop in December 2025 versus November 2025 after seasonal and calendar adjustment. In the three‑month moving average, production in these sectors from October to December 2025 was 0.5 percent lower than in the prior three months. Relative to December 2024, energy‑intensive production was 2.6 percent lower after calendar adjustment.
For the full year 2025, manufacturing production was 1.1 percent lower than the previous year, after calendar adjustment.
In 2025, production in industry fell by 1.3 percent and in construction by 1.7 percent compared with the previous year, while energy generation rose by 1.6 percent.
The industry decline is mainly attributed to the automotive sector (‑1.7 percent versus the previous year), machine manufacturing (‑2.6 percent), and the energy‑intensive industries.
Energy‑intensive industries produced 2.6 percent less after calendar adjustment than in 2024; production had already fallen sharply in 2022 and 2023. Compared with 2021, 2025 production in these sectors was 17.8 percent lower, according to the Federal Office.
