During a broad reshuffle at the Foreign Office, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) has been assigned a new political adviser. After Jasper Wieck, who was borrowed from the Foreign Ministry and is slated to become Germany’s ambassador to India, steps down, the role will be taken over by diplomat Martin Schäfer, as reported by “Der Tagesspiegel” on Wednesday, citing sources from the defense ministry.
Schäfer served from 2013 to 2017 as the spokesperson for the Foreign Office under former Foreign Minister Frank‑Walter Steinmeier. He later held the post of ambassador to South Africa and worked at the embassy in Paris. Since 2024, he has been Germany’s representative in Brussels on the Political and Security Committee, commonly referred to as the “PSK ambassador”.
