Delivery Workers Face Rising Aggression

Deutsche Post’s logistics chief, Nikola Hagleitner, has voiced concerns over a rise in aggressive behavior directed toward postal delivery workers. Addressing newspapers within the Funke-Mediengruppe, Hagleitner noted a shift from the pandemic era when delivery personnel were widely celebrated as essential workers, to a current climate marked by increased verbal abuse.

Conflicts frequently arise from parking disputes and there has been a noticeable increase, although not frequent, in physical altercations against delivery staff. Hagleitner affirmed that Deutsche Post actively investigates such incidents and files reports with law enforcement when employees are targeted.

To address the situation, Deutsche Post is providing de-escalation training for its workforce. Employees are also instructed to prioritize their own safety in conflict situations. Hagleitner emphasized that the vast majority of citizens appreciate the work of delivery personnel.

The comments follow a recent incident in Herne which garnered nationwide attention. Regarding the dismissal of a delivery worker who allegedly struck a couple after being subjected to verbal insults, Hagleitner defended the decision. While acknowledging the provocation suffered by the employee, she stated that Deutsche Post cannot condone violence and that a line had been crossed.

Hagleitner confirmed that all delivery personnel are required to present a clean criminal record as part of the hiring process. She also stated that, while the demographic shift presents challenges, particularly in urban areas, Deutsche Post continues to find sufficient qualified candidates to meet staffing needs.
