Despite an agreed-upon two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran, the shipping company Hapag-Lloyd still considers the situation in the Persian Gulf dangerous. A spokesperson for the Hamburg-based company told “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” that, given their current risk assessment, they continue to advise against transiting the strait. However, they also stated that they are continuously and very carefully reviewing when passage might become possible again.
The spokesperson expressed satisfaction with the apparent progress during the negotiations between the US and Iran, emphasizing, “Nonetheless, the situation around the Strait of Hormuz remains tense”. Whether the announced opening of the critical waterway will hold up remains to be seen in the coming days. Hapag-Lloyd is one of the world’s largest shipping companies. Currently, six of the company’s vessels are located in the Persian Gulf; five are chartered, and one belongs to Hapag-Lloyd itself.
