Deutsche Bahn plans to enforce an alcohol ban across all 5,400 of its train stations throughout Germany. This widespread measure, which builds on existing restrictions at around 30 major train hubs such as those in Hamburg, Cologne, and Munich, is set to be fully implemented by October 15, 2026. The national corporation will be expanding its internal rights and regulations across its entire network, with local house rules being adjusted in coordination with municipalities and authorities in the coming weeks.
Evelyn Palla, the head of DB, stated to Bild that the decision was driven by a need for stricter control, declaring, “Enough is enough. We are now getting much tougher.” She emphasized that this move aims to improve order and safety not only on the platforms but also within the trains themselves, highlighting the protection of both staff and passengers as the primary concern.
According to DB, the ban specifically targets the direct consumption of alcohol on platforms and within station halls. However, there are defined exceptions: alcohol served within licensed station restaurants and catering establishments remains permissible. Furthermore, passengers are still allowed to carry sealed alcoholic beverages-for instance, items bought at the station supermarket-in their personal bags.
Compliance with the ban will be monitored by both DB security personnel and the Federal Police. Anyone caught consuming alcohol illegally could face immediate removal from the premises. Repeated violations, however, carry the risk of a permanent exclusion from the station facilities.
