Deutsche Bahn Reports Major Loss in First Half of 2025

German rail operator Deutsche Bahn concluded the first half of 2025 with a significant net loss of €760 million, the company announced on Thursday. This figure represents an improvement compared to the €1.6 billion loss recorded during the same period in 2024. The adjusted earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) totaled €239 million.

Accounting for positive one-off effects, primarily stemming from the sale of its Schenker logistics division, the company reported a net income of €6.9 billion. Overall group revenue increased by 3.4% to €13.3 billion.

Despite the revenue growth, Deutsche Bahn stated that the results fell short of expectations, largely attributed to the continued vulnerability of its infrastructure, the necessity for an extensive program of construction and maintenance works and the resulting impacts on punctuality. During the first half of 2025, 63.4% of long-distance trains arrived on time, a slight increase from the 62.7% recorded in the first half of 2024.

Passenger numbers rose considerably, with approximately 943 million passengers utilizing Deutsche Bahn trains – a rise from roughly 919 million in the corresponding timeframe last year. The volume of passenger transport increased to 41.9 billion passenger kilometers, representing a near four percent increase compared to the previous year.
