Deutsche Telekom plans to weave artificial intelligence directly into its mobile network, aiming to make services such as chatbots and real‑time translation more accessible to a wide user base. Executive Abdu Mudesir, responsible for the company’s technology strategy, announced the initiative in the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”.
The AI assistant, which the group will unveil at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next week, can be summoned with the phrase “Hey Magenta”. When activated, it joins phone calls and answers questions in real time. Access will also be possible on basic devices such as feature phones; an expensive smartphone is not required. “Our AI assistant acts as a trusted partner for all customers” Mudesir said, noting that it will soon offer live translations, note‑taking, and calendar management.
With this move, Deutsche Telekom is positioning itself against U.S. technology firms that run their AI agents primarily through apps. “We are no longer just a telecommunications company, we are a tech firm” Mudesir added. “Our clear goal is to assume a leading role in the AI field as a German company”.
