Christian Schaft, the faction leader for the Left Party in Thuringia, is demanding consequences in the ongoing debate surrounding antisemitism within the Berlin Left. According to Schaft, who spoke to the Rheinische Post, the stance of Elif Eralp and the leadership of their Berlin chapter against any form of antisemitism is clear. He stressed that disciplinary actions must be taken in such cases, a position that Tobias Schulze, the faction chairman in the House of Representatives, has also made unequivocally.
However, Schaft made a distinction regarding the necessary confrontation of antisemitic views within the party. He argued that neither Eralp nor the party members in Berlin should be subjected to collective punishment for these issues. Schaft added that the Berlin populace desires change, asserting that this change can only be achieved with Elif Eralp as mayor, and highlighted high rents as Berlin’s most pressing problem.
Separately, Ferat Koçak, a Member of the Bundestag who successfully entered parliament as a direct candidate for his party in Berlin-Neukölln, had previously announced that he would temporarily withdraw from public life and from the Interior Committee due to controversial connections with a Berlin clan.
