Dobrindt Negotiates with Taliban on Deportations

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) is planning direct discussions with Syria and Afghanistan regarding the repatriation of foreign criminals.

Speaking to Focus magazine, the Minister stated that returning individuals to these two nations represents significant unresolved challenges. “Currently, there are no agreements in place with either country regarding the return of citizens” he explained. He noted that while contact has been established with Syria to explore a repatriation agreement for Syrian criminals, the outcomes of these discussions are still pending.

Regarding Afghanistan, Dobrindt indicated a desire for direct negotiations to facilitate return processes. He emphasized the current reliance on third parties to engage with Afghanistan is unsustainable in the long term. The Minister believes establishing direct agreements is crucial for a lasting solution to the issue of foreign nationals who have committed crimes in Germany and require repatriation.
