German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) is advocating for a more stringent migration policy across Europe. He intends to discuss specific measures with several of his counterparts from other EU nations. According to reports from the Interior Ministry cited by Handelsblatt, the ministerial meeting is scheduled to take place in two weeks on the Zugspitze mountain.
The “Zugspitz Summit on Migration” will focus on “reorganizing European migration policy”. The stated objective of the summit is to generate “important impulses for a tougher European migration policy and to present an agenda for accelerating migration processes in Europe”. Dobrindt has invited the interior ministers of neighboring countries France, Poland, Austria, Denmark and the Czech Republic, as well as EU Interior Commissioner Ylva Johansson.
The Interior Ministry indicates that a “Zugspitz Declaration” outlining concrete points will be adopted. Participating interior ministers are expected to drive the implementation of these points at the European level in the coming weeks and months. The measures under consideration include innovative solutions with third countries, a determined fight against human trafficking, consistent repatriations and strengthened EU external borders.
