Borussia Dortmund has secured the permanent signing of midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka from Chelsea. The 21-year-old, who previously spent a loan period with the club during the latter half of last season and the Club World Cup, has signed a contract that runs until June 30, 2030, the German club announced Tuesday.
Borussia Dortmund’s Managing Director, Lars Ricken, stated the move was crucial to bolstering the team’s attacking midfield options. “It was important for us to add quality and creativity to the offensive midfield” he said. “We are pleased to have secured such a talented player like Carney for the long term and are now looking forward to working together on his development.
Sporting Director Sebastian Kehl highlighted Chukwuemeka’s potential, noting his impact during his loan spell. “He has enormous potential, which he already demonstrated in the second half of last season” Kehl commented. “He can make the difference by repeatedly finding solutions in tight spaces and adds an additional footballing element to our midfield that is very beneficial.
Chukwuemeka made 17 competitive appearances for Borussia Dortmund last season, scoring one goal and will continue to wear the number 17 shirt.
