A significant increase in drone sightings over critical infrastructure – including airports, ports, defense contractors and military installations – is emerging as a key initial challenge for Germany’s newly established National Security Council. The council, designed to coordinate the efforts of various security agencies and still in the process of formalization, is already being compelled to act due to the escalating situation, according to reporting by Bild am Sonntag.
Intelligence services and law enforcement agencies are currently unable to definitively confirm or deny Russian involvement in the incidents. Reports suggest uncertainty even regarding the nature of the observed objects, with the possibility of small aircraft being misidentified as drones.
The German government is focused on developing a comprehensive understanding of the events. The Federal Intelligence Service (BND) is gathering information from neighboring countries, while the Federal Interior Ministry coordinates with the Federal Police and state authorities. The German armed forces are also contributing their own data. Sources within the government, speaking to Bild, indicate that the sheer volume of reported sightings underscores the urgent need for the National Security Council’s operational capabilities, which are slated to be fully established in the coming weeks.
