A recent Verivox analysis, reported by the Funke newspapers, shows that roughly half of all full‑coverage (vollkasko) policies cost electric‑vehicle drivers more than those who drive internal‑combustion models. Under otherwise identical conditions, premiums for e‑cars can be up to 44 % higher than for the same vehicle model powered by a petrol engine.
For a BMW X3, the comparison finds that the full‑coverage premiums for the electric version are up to 44 % higher than for the gasoline variant, even though both models fall into the same class. Of the tariffs available to a model driver for the two variants, about 49 % are pricier for the electric model, roughly 32 % are cheaper, and 19 % are equal.
The e‑SUV Skoda Enyaq is generally more expensive than the combustion‑engine Skoda Kodiaq. The analysis shows that some tariffs are up to 18 % higher for the Enyaq, with 40 % of the rates exceeding the Kodiaq’s cost, 35 % being cheaper, and about 26 % being identical.
Aljoscha Ziller, managing director of Verivox Versicherungsvergleich GmbH, said that insurers had long priced e‑cars more cheaply because of a lack of damage data and a desire to position themselves in a nascent growth market. “The era of blanket incentives for e‑cars is over” he added.
According to Verivox, long‑term data now indicate that while electric cars cause fewer accidents, the damages that do occur are often more expensive to repair-particularly under full‑coverage policies. Nonetheless, competitive rates for e‑car insurance are still possible, because some insurers keep low premiums to attract electric‑vehicle customers. Depending on the model and policy, e‑car drivers could save up to 23 % compared with combustion‑engine rivals.
Ziller advises e‑car owners to shop around carefully before choosing a policy. “Besides the price, they should check that essential protections are included-especially coverage for the expensive battery”. The tariffs still vary significantly on these points.
For the study, Verivox created model calculations for a 45‑year‑old resident of Berlin who drives 12,000 km per year and has a 15th no‑fault insurance class. The analysis covered more than 400 tariffs from roughly 60 insurers.
