SV Elversberg secured a commanding 4-0 victory over FC Magdeburg on Sunday, propelling them to the top of the 2. Bundesliga standings. The result leaves Magdeburg firmly rooted at the bottom of the league.
Despite an energetic opening from the home side, who created several early opportunities, Elversberg demonstrated composure and efficiency. A promising chance for Magdeburg’s Ghrieb in the 10th minute was thwarted by a crucial save from SVE goalkeeper Kristof. Shortly after, a goal from the same player was disallowed following a VAR review for offside.
Elversberg initially struggled to find their rhythm but began to gain control through set pieces. Bambasé Conté capitalized on a defensive lapse by Magdeburg in the 23rd minute to open the scoring. Ebnoutalib narrowly missed extending the lead a few minutes later.
The visitors extended their lead just before halftime when Conté surged down the right flank and delivered a precise pass to Tom Zimmerschied, who calmly slotted the ball home from close range. The goal was subsequently confirmed by VAR.
The second half saw Magdeburg attempting to claw their way back into the match, but their efforts were largely unsuccessful. Shots from Atik and Ghrieb were either blocked by a resolute Elversberg defense or expertly handled by Kristof.
Elversberg, meanwhile, maintained their composure and waited for opportunities to present themselves. Otto Stange increased the lead with a well-executed counterattack in the 74th minute and Jarzinho Malanga added a fourth in the 80th minute after a defensive error allowed him to break free.
The match wound down in the final stages, with Magdeburg attempting long-range efforts while Elversberg maintained a controlled and comfortable lead. Kristof produced a late save against Atik before the final whistle confirmed Elversberg’s deserved away victory.
Elsewhere on Sunday afternoon, Greuther Fürth and Hannover 96 played out a 2-2 draw, while Schalke secured a 2-1 victory against Arminia Bielefeld.
