European Union leaders have signaled their willingness to contribute to future security commitments for Ukraine. The commitments would be undertaken “in accordance with their respective capabilities and competencies, consistent with international law” and taking into account the security and defense interests of all member states, according to a joint statement released Tuesday by all EU nations except Hungary.
A Ukraine capable of effectively defending itself is presented as integral to any future security arrangement. EU leaders simultaneously acknowledged the efforts of US President Donald Trump toward bringing an end to Russia’s military actions and achieving a “just and durable peace” founded on international law.
The leaders affirmed the necessity of upholding Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity and maintaining that international borders should not be altered by force. “The path to peace in Ukraine cannot be decided without Ukraine” the statement reads.
