While acknowledging progress made by the EU Migration Pact – which he says for the first time offers the potential to better manage asylum and migration – Brunner stressed the need for improved return procedures “It cannot be that only one in five people who are illegally in Europe and have an existing return order are actually returned” he explained
Brunner also offered a retrospective assessment of previous migration policies, diverging from the approach taken during Angela Merkel’s tenure “With the benefit of hindsight, one is always likely to appear more successful than beforehand” he commented
