EU Calls on US to Clarify Customs Actions After Supreme Court Ruling

Following the US Supreme Court’s customs ruling, the EU Commission has demanded that the U.S. government clarify its forthcoming trade‑policy measures.

The Brussels authority said on Sunday that the current situation is not conducive to a “fair, balanced and mutually beneficial” transatlantic trade and investment environment, as agreed in the joint EU‑U.S. statement of August 2025. It emphasized that the EU’s interests will always be protected without limitation and that EU companies and exporters must be treated fairly and can rely on predictability and legal certainty.

The EU expects the United States to honour its commitments under the joint statement, just as the EU upholds its own obligations. Of particular importance is that EU goods continue to receive the most competitive treatment, with tariffs remaining below the previously agreed cap. Tariffs, it stresses, are taxes that raise costs for consumers and businesses, a fact confirmed by recent studies.

The Commission remains in close and continuous contact with the U.S. government and will keep working to reduce duties so as to preserve a stable and predictable transatlantic trading environment.
