During the Munich Security Conference the so‑called European core group on third‑country solutions gathered to advance “innovative models” in particular the Return Hub concept, announced the German Interior Ministry.
Attending were EU Commissioner Magnus Brunner, Dutch Minister for Asylum and Migration David van Weel, and Austrian Interior Minister Gerhard Karner. The group also received support from Greece and Denmark.
Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt used the occasion to discuss with European partners and representatives from additional third countries how such models can be legally sound and effectively merged into both national and EU asylum systems. He said Europe was ready to “take shared responsibility and chart new paths”.
The core group first formed informally on the sidelines of the Council of Interior and Justice Ministers in Cyprus. Its current goal is to embed the initiative more firmly across Europe and to set concrete joint cooperation models in motion.
