Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has underscored the importance of accelerating the European Union’s enlargement process, framing it as vital for both prosperity and security. Speaking ahead of a visit to Zagreb, Minister Wadephul stated a strong, unified and open Europe serves not only as a promise of wellbeing, but also as a bulwark against authoritarian influence and a guarantor of continental stability.
He particularly highlighted Croatia’s crucial role as a model and bridge-builder for aspiring member states, especially those in the Western Balkans. Wadephul expressed his desire for Croatia to actively contribute to the accession processes of countries in the region, emphasizing their understanding of the associated opportunities and challenges.
The Minister described Croatia as more than just a close and reliable partner for Germany, positioning the nation as an exemplar of European integration. He noted that Croatia’s successful EU accession demonstrates the transformative power of reform, perseverance and courage in offering new opportunities to citizens.
Wadephul argued that, in a period of global upheaval, Europe’s strength lies in its cohesion and clear vision for the future. He stressed the importance of providing concrete pathways towards EU membership for candidate countries in the region, based on principles of the rule of law, fundamental rights and a commitment to reform.
He warned that a lack of such a clear perspective creates opportunities for autocratic forces to exert influence through disinformation, corruption and coercion, potentially undermining support for the European project and fostering new dependencies. Wadephul concluded by reiterating that Croatia’s journey towards EU membership serves as a demonstration of the benefits of accession for both the citizens of candidate nations and for Europe as a whole.
