EU Interior Commissioner Brunner Urges Greater European Autonomy in Security Matters

European Interior Minister Magnus Brunner has called for greater EU autonomy in both internal and external security. At a conference in Berlin-broadcast by the Tagesspiegel, the Zeit, Handelsblatt and Wirtschaftswoche-he stressed that Europe needs a “security mindset” across all policy domains.

Brunner pointed out that, while the EU is today the safest place in the world, that status should not lead to complacency. He argued that security is the “basic prerequisite” for economic competitiveness and political freedom, and that it must be woven into every policy area, from energy to migration.

He noted that cooperation within Europe has improved significantly over recent years, but highlighted that international information sharing-particularly between Europol and Interpol-needs further development. “The lines between internal and external security are becoming blurred” he said, underscoring the necessity of stronger cross‑border collaboration.
